Advanced Skills in Child-Centered Play Therapy

Description:


Deepen your knowledge and skills in child-centered play therapy (CCPT) with a focus on the application of child-centered principles and philosophy in practice, development of advanced CCPT skills, and strategies for responding to common challenges in the playroom. In this highly experiential workshop, participants will have opportunities to practice and receive feedback on their CCPT skills, learn advanced responding and limit-setting skills, attend to cultural opportunities in play therapy, and explore practical avenues for integrating CCPT research to support play therapy practice.




Learning Objectives:


Participants will be able to identify the key tenets of person-centered theory as they apply to child-centered play therapy.


Participants will be able to demonstrate child-centered play therapy skills and attitudes.


Participants will be able to demonstrate when and how to use limit-setting and choice giving within child-centered play therapy.  


Participants will be able to describe cultural humility and cultural opportunities in the context of play therapy.


Participants will be able to access and apply research on child-centered play therapy to support play therapy practice.


Instructor Bio:

I’m Dr. Kimberly Jayne (she/they). I am deeply passionate about growth, healing, play therapy, parents and families, and making the world a nurturing place for children and all their adults. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Oregon, a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in New Mexico, and a Board-Certified Counselor. I have extensive training and experience in play therapy and child-centered play therapy. I am a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor, a Certified Child-Centered Play Therapy Supervisor & Trainer and a Certified Child-Parent Relationship Therapy Supervisor & Trainer. I am also certified in Perinatal Mental Health. I am an Associate Professor of Counselor Education at Saybrook University and am the director of the play therapy program at the Helen Gordon Child Development Center. I teach, train, supervise, research, and write extensively about play therapy, child and adolescent counseling, and family therapy. I work with children, adolescents, and adults through play, art, sand, and talk therapy. I enjoy working with individuals and families experiencing challenges and joys in parenting, folks healing from trauma, journeying through loss and grief, and anxiety, and with gender-expansive and trans children, youth, and their families. I currently work with individual adults and parents/guardians/families through telehealth, and provide supervision for Registered Associates seeking licensure as LPCs and LMFTs in Oregon. I also supervise play therapists seeking to become registered play therapists, school-based registered play therapists, and certified in child-centered play therapy (CCPT) and child-parent relationship therapy (CPRT).
