Foundations in Play Therapy: The Greats

DESCRIPTION: 

This workshop will provide the historical foundations of play therapy and an overview of several of its current models, including: child-centered play therapy, Jungian play therapy, Gestalt play therapy, cognitive-behavioral play therapy, Adlerian play therapy, prescriptive play therapy, ecosystemic play therapy, and developmental play therapy.  Videotape vignettes and an interactive format will be utilized to highlight materials presented.


OBJECTIVES:

Following the workshop, participants should be able to:

1.recognize the historical development of play therapy;
2.differentiate and critique psychodynamic models of play therapy;
3.differentiate and critique humanistic models of play therapy;
4.differentiate and critique cognitive and integrative models of play therapy;
5.investigate play as a child’s natural medium of expression; and,
6.evaluate play's integral function in the therapeutic relationship

Instructor Bio:

Geri Glover has worked with children and families for over 30 years in education, day treatment programs, private practice, mental health clinics, and is currently Professor and Chair of the Counseling Department at New Mexico Highlands University. She completed research in Filial Therapy with Native Americans residing on the Flathead Reservation in northern Montana in honor of her Salish ancestry. Her research has appeared in such publications as The School Counselor Journal and The International Journal of Play Therapy. Dr. Glover is a strong advocate of multicultural awareness and its importance in the therapeutic relationship. She has numerous publications, and is co-author of Play Therapy Interventions with Children’s Problems.
