Description:
This workshop will provide specific information for working with various cultures in the context of play
therapy. Participants will review the theoretical basis for multicultural counseling. In addition,
participants will learn about using child-centered play therapy and filial therapy with diverse cultures and
how to prepare a space that is inclusive and respectful of all cultures. An interactive format will be
utilized to highlight the materials presented.
Learning Objectives:
Following the workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Apply the theoretical basis for multicultural counseling to play therapy.
2. Facilitate awareness of commonalities and differences between various cultures.
3. Evaluate the usefulness of non-directive play therapy approaches with diverse cultures.
4. Recognize the impact of bias, diversity, and social justice on the mental health of children.
5. Clarify ways of including and honoring the family in the play therapy process.
6. Develop an inclusive play therapy space.
